Prof Declan Devane, a Professor of Midwifery at National University of Ireland, Galway and the Director of the Health Research Board - Trials Methodology Research Network (HRB-TMRN) and an Editor at the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group was invited as a visiting professor to the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Prof Devane spent three weeks (March 5-23, 2018) in Yogyakarta and spoke at several training and workshops arranged by Cochrane Indonesia.

As part of our commitment to put evidence based medicine at the centre of health service and health science, we have held various scientific meetings involving many experts from both inside and outside Indonesia. Among these are the International Conference on Epidemiology Evidence Based Medicine (ICE-EBM), Workshops on Cochrane Systematic Reviews and the Workshop Evidence Summit, which all aimed to teach EBM to all health practitioners.

In a significant step for national health research and training, Cochrane Indonesia was launched on Monday 5 March at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta. Cochrane’s global CEO Mark Wilson travelled from London to join Cochrane Indonesia’s Director Dr Detty Nurdiati at a formal ceremony to inaugurate the high-profile, independent research organisation’s newest centre. 

There’s a certain symmetry in the founding stories of Cochrane Indonesia and the global Cochrane network itself. The origins of both lie in the shared work of extraordinary people who place evidence at the centre of better health and care, especially for mothers and their babies. Here, Cochrane Indonesia’s Director Dr Detty Nurdiati reflects on her continued contributions to maternal and perinatal health and the work of Cochrane.Despite rising prosperity, over 40 women die in childbirth every day in Indonesia.

Evidence-based medicine has a long history in Indonesia. In the early 1980s, a critical mass from Gadjah Mada University went abroad under the Rockefeller Foundation’s scholarship program to study clinical epidemiology in one of the Clinical Epidemiology Research and Training Centers (CERTC) in Canada and Australia. The newly-formed group of clinical epidemiologists was then nurtured in the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN).
