Universitas Gadjah Mada

The Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistic Unit (CEBU) of Faculty of Medicine UGM was formed based on an assignment letter issued jointly by the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, UGM and the Director of Dr. Sardjito hospital in 1984, to improve the quality of health care, medical education and research, and public health policy in developing countries. CEBU was the only International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) member from Indonesia at that time and has achieved an outstanding level in education and research activities.

CEBU has been conducting master degree for clinical epidemiology since 1992, with the students from Indonesia and abroad (China, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Irak). The recognitions in research activities is shown by the large number of research projects from CEBU, and the appointment of CEBU as the Clinical Epidemiology Research and Training Center (CERTC) in Indonesia for ASEAN.

The vision of CEBU of The Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing & Dr. Sardjito is to become an excellent institution on education and clinical research and to promote evidence based medicine for improving health care services and health policy in Indonesia. CEBU has mission to contribute multi disciplinary approach (clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical and health economics, and social science) in solving priority health problems in the clinical and community settings, and to facilitate teaching, learning, and consultations in applied clinical and health research, and health care evaluation based on clinical epidemiology approach in Indonesia.

The objectives of CEBU are:

  1. Organizing and conducting research in clinical and community setting
  2. Organizing and conducting seminars, trainings and workshops in clinical epidemiology, Evidence Based Medicine, research methodology and biostatistics, and health technology assessment
  3. Supporting training of undergraduate and postgraduate programs on research methodology and Evidence Based Medicine, and to provide assistance and consultancy for health research in the faculty and hospital.

Activities that have been done in last years including several national and international workshops, i.e:

  1. Cochrane Systematic Review (CSR) and Evidence Based Clinical Practice Guideline (EB-CPG), in collaboration with Cochrane Australia
  2. Clinical Decision Making (CDM), Proposal Development and Thesis Supervision, in collaboration with Institute Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp, Belgium
  3. National training on Good Clinical Practice, in collaboration with Regional Training Center (RTC) WHO-TDR and Indonesia Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence Based Medicine (ICE-EBM) Network
  4. Evidence Based Medicine for several Faculty of Medicine and Hospitals in Indonesia
  5. Health Technology Assessment (HTA)
